Bosque

bos·que
a cluster or group of trees.
The purpose of this project was to make use of the knowledge of woodworking joints, as well as a better understanding of the properties of plywood. Bosque also helps to exhibit the workmanship skill of the paired team through the crafting phase of bench-making.
The bench needs to be able to withstand the weight of both team members in order to succeed as a functional bench, and also show minimal errors through its stability as well as finishing.
The bench’s form is inspired by the Supertrees found in Gardens By the Bay where its trunk is slender and slowly branches out.
The spaces between the thin legs, branches and seats create the overall visually light look to the bench. Its legs draw inspiration from J. Mayer H’s Metropol, where a strong and heavy structure is seemingly lightweight, due to the effective use of space. It also draws inspiration from organic elements in architecture as well, such as La Sagrada Familia, where it has taken inspiration from forests too. Our largest inspiration is drawn from the fact that Singapore will always be known for being a garden city.
Throughout the bench, only 2 typed of joints have been used- Mortise and Tenon, as well as cross joints. These joints help to combine the seats with the legs, as well as form the legs’ structure respectively.
With all these aspects combined together, the bench comes together to form a silhouette resembling ltall slender trees, yet provide strong stability with its structure, just like trees in nature. This bench’s design serves as a reminder that all man made items have origins that trace back to nature.
